Children’s critical illness cover: what matters

If a child becomes seriously ill, a payout could help with time away from work or additional household costs. What is covered, and how much a policy could pay, varies.

The details we compare

DetailWhat we check
Who is coveredWhich children qualify, when cover starts and when it ends.
When it paysCovered definitions, exclusions, relevant pre-existing conditions and any survival period.
How much it paysPayment limits, links to adult cover and the rules for additional or multiple claims.
What happens afterwardsWhether a child’s claim affects adult cover, and what happens if the adult policy ends.

Included cover and optional cover can differ

For example, Guardian’s Combined Life and Critical Illness Essentials includes children’s critical illness cover. Guardian also offers optional Children’s Critical Illness Protection.

These are different benefits. The amount of cover, covered conditions and relationship with the adult policy need to be checked for the exact product selected. An optional benefit should not be assumed to work in the same way as the included cover.

Choose around your family’s needs

We help you consider the financial flexibility you would want if your child became seriously ill. That includes the effect of time away from work, ongoing household spending and the support you already have.

We then explain relevant options and their cost alongside the rest of your protection.

A diagnosis must meet the policy terms

Children’s critical illness cover does not pay for every illness. A claim must meet a covered definition and the other requirements of the policy.
