Start with your actual sick pay
Your contract, length of service and work arrangements determine your entitlement. We help you review any period of full pay, any reduced-pay period and what happens when contractual sick pay ends.
Bring your employment benefits information and details of existing cover. Private practice, locum, bank and other earnings should be considered separately.
How specialist NHS arrangements can help
Royal London offers a specific arrangement for eligible medical professionals whose sick-pay entitlement matches the NHS structure.
Eligibility includes registration or provisional registration with the General Medical Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council or General Dental Council. Doctors and surgeons also need a current UK licence to practise. The criteria must be met at claim, and the cover must be set up appropriately.
Under this arrangement, a qualifying benefit can begin when sick pay halves and increase when sick pay ends, subject to the insured amount and policy rules. It does not automatically restore your full salary or apply to every NHS employee.
Two different periods to understand
Waiting period
How long you need to be unable to work before a qualifying benefit becomes payable. We consider this alongside your sick pay and savings.
Payment period
How long payments can continue during a qualifying claim. A limited payment period can leave a later gap even when the starting point fits your sick pay.
We help connect the details
We consider the earnings you want to protect, the insurer’s definition of being unable to work, your existing benefits and your budget.
Tell us about planned changes to your hours, employer or mix of NHS and other work. Those changes can affect how the cover fits.
