Four choices that shape the policy
Monthly benefit
how much income the policy can provide, within the insurer's earnings rules.
Waiting period
how long you need to be unable to work before payments become due. This should be considered alongside sick pay and available savings.
Payment period
how long a qualifying claim can pay. A limited payment period is different from cover that can pay to the policy end date.
Definition of incapacity
the test used to decide whether you qualify. We explain how it relates to your work and circumstances.
Start with what you already have
Check your employer's sick-pay arrangements, any existing income protection and the savings you are comfortable using. If you work for yourself, consider what income would continue without your day-to-day work.
Work arrangements matter
Employment, self-employment, NHS work and mixed sources of earnings can require different choices. We look at the actual arrangements rather than relying only on a job title.
Important limitations
The policy will not normally replace all your income. Existing cover and other income can affect the benefit payable. Exclusions and underwriting terms may apply. Income protection for illness or injury is generally not redundancy insurance. Payments do not begin simply because you have submitted an enquiry or application.
Can I claim more than once? Some policies allow further claims while cover remains in force, subject to their rules and benefit limits.
Is this the same as critical illness cover? No. They use different claim tests and payment structures. They may serve complementary needs.
