What insurers consider
For example, The Exeter’s Real Life underwriting approach considers both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Information requested includes:
- When you were diagnosed.
- Your most recent HbA1c reading.
- Any diabetes-related complications.
- Other medical conditions.
These details help the insurer assess the application. Acceptance and price depend on the full circumstances; the diagnosis alone does not determine the outcome.
We help you work out which cover you need
You do not need to arrive knowing which policy to ask for. We start with the people who depend on you, your financial commitments, existing cover and budget.
Life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection serve different purposes and have different assessment criteria. An insurer’s willingness to offer one does not mean it will offer all three.
Understand the terms before deciding
We compare relevant options from our panel and explain any recommendation. If an insurer offers a higher premium or different terms, we explain what that means for the cover and your budget.
One insurer’s decision does not automatically tell you how another will assess your application. We cannot guarantee acceptance or a particular premium.
Medical information belongs in the secure advice process
We will explain what information is needed and how to provide it securely. If you are unsure of a date or medical result, tell us rather than guessing.
Please do not send medical information through general website or email enquiries. A request to discuss life insurance and your preferred contact details are enough to start.
Already have a policy?
Keep existing cover in place while reviewing your options. Do not cancel it on the assumption that replacement cover will be available.
